This isn't a cover for anything I would write. For our covers I draw out my own ideas and work from there, but if you don't have the artistic ability this is one way to create a stylized artistic image for a book cover without "cheating" by using someone else's image. I will keep the images realistic until the end where I'll have it change image styles. This uses all free cloud AI services.

Start With the Character

In this case I decided I wanted to create a generic romance cover for the following concept:

The Celebrity Body Double An ordinary person with an uncanny resemblance to an elite, notoriously difficult A-list celebrity makes a living stepping in for dangerous publicity stunts, exhausting press tours, and decoy escapes from the paparazzi.

What is She in Real Life?

The Reclusive Illustrator / Introvert

  • Background: A freelance creative who prefers a quiet life behind a drawing tablet. They happen to share a striking, uncanny resemblance to a chaotic pop icon. They only take the double gigs sporadically when the paycheck is too massive to pass up.

  • Personality: Deeply observant, dryly witty, and an extreme introvert. They find the sudden, blinding flash of celebrity culture overwhelming and count down the minutes until they can put on sweatpants and vanish back into anonymity.

  • The Conflict: They are forced into a prolonged, high-profile public isolation scenario (like hiding out at a remote estate) with the rival or bodyguard. Deprived of their usual escape routes, their quiet, authentic self starts slipping through the fake celebrity armor.

As a writer, you pretty much have an idea what your character looks like.

Looks good. Nice and frumpy and not an a-list celebrity type.

Now Make a Character Reference Sheet

Prompt (Free Gemini):

This is an important step if you need to make several images using the character. You can feed this to an AI to maintain the look.

Writers struggle immensely with AI changing character faces between shots. It is worth highlighting that creating the reference sheet first is the secret sauce that allows us to successfully transform her into the evening gown while keeping the exact same facial structure.

Let's create the Alter Ego

Now let's bring them together. I want them to be looking at each other in surprise--like a mirror but blended backgrounds.

Maintain the same posture and give each one an expression of surprise at looking at each other. Have theer hands clasping each other in the middle. Do not add any text. Keep each one in their own background and blend the backgrounds together.

Now let's change Image models from Free Gemini to Free ChatGPT. This will remove the watermark and give us a different look.

Prompt (Free ChatGPT):

Take this concept image and turn it into a highly detailed painting. Keep the same look and pose for each character. Extend the image up and down by 15%. Blend the backgrounds together and blur them so the meld together.

From here, you can take the image into a free image editor like Affinity to add text. I made a video showing this process for another cover idea.
